1000 Stories Zinfandel (Bourbon Aged) – Review

1000 Stories Zinfandel

A Murlo friend recently recommended the 2017 1000 Stories Zinfandel (Bourbon Aged) Batch #62 California wine.  This wine did not disappoint!  This is a wine to consider even for a casual wine drinker looking for a quality red wine for a special occasion.

From 1000 Stories
1000 Stories begins its aging like most Zinfandels: in wine barrels. Then, the tradition transitions to innovation. Bob selects a combination of new and used bourbon barrels to complete the aging process. Each batch is crafted individually and is unique in its final profile.  Aging in bourbon barrels imparts characteristics of charred vanilla and dried herbs.

The Story
A leader in crafting wine aged in bourbon barrels, 1000 Stories melds California’s winemaking heritage with America’s storied bourbon culture. Expertly crafted by Master Winemaker Bob Blue from renowned California vineyards, 1000 Stories gets its acclaimed nuance and complexity from time spent in charred bourbon barrels—revealing a uniquely American story in every glass.

The Wine
We release 1000 Stories Zinfandel in batches to reflect a unique mix of grape varieties, vineyards and bourbon barrels—no two batches are the same. Batch 62—the final batch from the excellent 2017 vintage—is exceptionally smooth, with a ripe raspberry character indicative of Mendocino County’s sun-drenched Zinfandel vines. The bramble and berry palate is accented by a savory richness, layered over bourbon barrel notes of dried herbs and burnt vanilla.
